Wicked, whose music and lyrics
is composed by Stephen Swartz and the script is written by Winnie
Holzman. It is an adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked:
the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is
based upon L. Frank Baum’s story
The Wizard of Oz.
The
musical representation of Wicked tells the story
of Oz before Dorothy came to the
Emerald City. Wicked acts a prequel to The
Wizard of Oz providing the
details of how Oz and the characters in it came to be the way they
are.
Taking place at Shiz University, the
story is developed by the unlikely friendship between the two main
characters; Galinda, who becomes Glinda, the beautiful and very
popular witch, and Elphaba, who was born with bright green skin and
is the very smart yet ostracized and seriously misunderstood witch.
Wicked
tells the story about how
the two unlikely friends, Glinda and Elphaba meet and how Glinda
grows to become Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba grows to become The
Wicked Witch of the West. |
When asked
about what the musical
adaptation of Wicked, Stephen Swartz was quoted as
saying that
“Primarily we were interested in the relationship between
Glinda
and Elphaba… the friendship of these two women and how their
characters lead them to completely different destiny’s and
how
their friendship is tested, broken and mended through this
process.”
Wicked
also explains the stories
behind the famous Wizard
of Oz characters such as the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the
Cowardly Lion, and the Wicked Witch of the East.
